About Department

Life sciences are study of composition, structure and function of living forms and their interaction with environment. The scope of life sciences is wide and is one of the most promising areas of research. Life sciences enhance our understanding of nature of life, and provide new insights to diverse areas in biology such as disease pathogenesis, diagnosis, prevention and cure. The acquired knowledge in Life sciences also helps us to combat various environmental issues, finding out ways of sustainable management, and biodiversity conservation, to name a few. Department of Life sciences offers undergraduate and or postgraduate courses in various disciplines such as Biotechnology, Microbiology, Food Science and Technology, Botany and Zoology.

  • To acquire and impart knowledge of biology and bio-techniques so as to build capacity for addressing current global challenges

Mission

  • To train and transform students into thinking researchers/ professionals who are able to integrate theoretical knowledge and analytical skills in diverse areas of Biotechnology.
  • To make students and faculties updated with advance techniques and to introduce the students to dynamic environment of bioscience
  • To conduct cutting-edge interdisciplinary research.
  • To introduce various skill development courses thereby enhancing the employability and providing opportunities for industry-academia collaboration.

 

         

Awards & Achievements

  • Many of our students have qualified UGC-CSIR NET and GATE exam and are pursuing higher studies.
  • Department is actively collaborating with various industries such as Cryoviva Pvt Ltd. for placement of UG and PG students.

Seminars & Workshops

  • Hands-on session for undergraduate students were organized for safe and effective handling of e-waste in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh in collaboration with E[CO] Work company and Sharda Welfare Foundation on April 26, 2023.
  • The Intellectual Property Office of India hosted an online training programme for IP awareness as part of the "National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission", on April 15, 2023.
  • One day symposium organized on “Cancer Awareness Program” on the occasion of World Cancer Day on February 04, 2023.
  • Sports Event organized for under graduate students on the occasion of National Youth Day at the Sharda University, January 12, 2023.
  • Faculty Development program on "Green Technology and Approaches for Waste Valorization” held on 13 -18 June 2022.

  • Prof. Sibaram Khara, honourable vice chancellor of Sharda University congratulated Dr. Piyush Kumar Gupta for publishing a review article in Molecular Cancer, BMC (IF = 41.444) a top peer-reviewed international journal of cancer research. He also applauded Dr. Soumya Pandit for publishing a textbook in CRC publisher.
  • Prof. Sibaram Khara, honourable vice chancellor of Sharda University congratulated Dr. Piyush Kumar Gupta for getting a Start-up Research Grant of a total cost of 24 lakhs from the Science and Engineering Research Board, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India

Facilities and Resources

Department possess well equipped laboratories specialized for varied research and routine lab experiments. The faculty members are dynamic and pursue interdisciplinary research in areas of plant biotechnology, crop improvement, protein biochemistry, drug discovery, virology, fermentation, plant tissue culture, animal cell culture and industrial biotechnology, food preservation and development of novel food products etc.

  • Prof. Sibaram Khara, honorable vice chancellor of Sharda University felicitated Mr. Rohit Kumar, a Ph.D. student working under the supervision of Dr. Piyush Kumar Gupta for winning the UCB-Young Scientist Award during the 2nd Biotechnology Conclave organized by Uttarakhand Council for Biotechnology, Haldi, India
  • Ms. Aparna Sharma (System ID: 2020570764) completed her Master's degree in Biotechnology, Department of Life Sciences, Sharda School of Basic Sciences and Research, Sharda University. She published a peer reviewed Scopus Indexed journal paper as first author (Microbiomics for enhancing electron transfer in an electrochemical system. Frontiers in Microbiology. IF: 6.064. DOI:10.3389/fmicb.2022.868220). Currently, she is doing PhD in biotechnology from Kangwon National University, South Korea.
  • Mr. Dantuluri Veerabhadra Raju (System ID: 2019518409) completed his completed my Bachelor's degree in Microbiology from the Department of Life Sciences, Sharda School of Basic Sciences and Research, Sharda University. She published a peer reviewed Scopus Indexed journal paper as first author (Effect of bacterial quorum sensing and mechanism of antimicrobial resistance. Biocatalysis and Agricultural Biotechnology. DOI: 10.1016/j.bcab.2022.102409). Currently, he is doing Masters in biotechnology from Monash University, Australia.
