About the Programme

M.Sc. Forensic Science is a two year degree programme. Forensic science includes the use of scientific methods and expertise for the investigation of crime and analysis of evidence for further presentation in the court of law.  During the program student will learn about the various disciplines of forensic science like forensic biology (DNA), forensic chemistry trace evidence (hairs, fibers, paints glass, soil, etc.), Latent fingerprint examination, firearms and ammunition examination, handwriting analysis, fire and explosives examination. Digital and cyber forensic, Artificial Intelligence, forensic entomology, forensic nanotechnologies etc. are new upcoming areas included in the curriculum of M.Sc. Forensic Science. Risk analysis is a major skill that students can learn during the forensic program and can apply both in life and job.  

The goal of the programme is to generate scientists having analytical skills, forensic experts having vast knowledge and professional skills to critically analyze and act in the given situation.

PEO1: To make students aware about recent advancements in the field of Forensic Sciences

PEO2: To develop technical expertise in the students to acquire skills to work on R & D projects and in the area of Forensic Sciences

PEO3: To develop student’s with advanced skills in research, entrepreneurial and strategic knowledge for leading and managing various private / government organizations dealing in Forensic Science

PEO4: To make students competent for undertaking extension programmes in Forensic Sciences.

Program Outcomes (PO’s)

PO 1: Forensic Knowledge: Produce professional Post Graduates with

  • Ability to apply diverse information to solve a real problem
  • Conceptual understanding of criminal justice system

PO 2: Problem analysis:   Recognize, formulate and investigate complex forensic problems reaching corroborated conclusions using principles of natural sciences.

PO 3: Design/development of solutions: Organize exposition for intricate forensic issues and propagate knowledge for public health and safety, along with the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

PO 4: Individual and team work: Design of experiments and analyse data for synthesis of information to reach on valid conclusions. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the forensic skills and apply these to one’s own work, or as a member in a team, to manage projects.

PO 5: Project management and finance: Students will become proficient to use various state- of-art equipment helpful in solving cases. Work proficiently as a member of crime investigating teams. Equipped for jobs in not only Govt. Sectors like Forensic Science Laboratories (FSL/CFSL) but also other firms such as Banks, Insurance Agencies, Detective Agencies, Security Agencies, Pharmaceutical Companies, Chemical Industries, Testing Laboratories and Instrumentation Companies.

PO 6: Communication: To work as forensic science experts and provide assistance to the Criminal Justice System and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the society. Proficiently communicate with the forensic community and being able to understand and write effective reports, documentation and make effective presentations.

PO 7: Environment and sustainability:   Demonstrate the knowledge of forensic science for sustainable development of man, society and environment. Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the forensic lab professionals.

Eligibility Criteria
For National Students

B.Sc. (Forensic Science)/B.Sc. (Pass) with any of the two subjects viz. Botany, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology or BDS with at least 50% marks in aggregate

For International Students The eligibility criterion for all programs for international applicants is minimum 50% in the qualifying examination and having studied the pre-requisite subjects for admission in to the desired program.
