About the Programme
MD in Psychiatry at Sharda University is a three-year programme divided into six semesters specialising in the study of the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, addictive, and emotional disorders. The programme helps to enlighten students on the medical, psychological, and social components of mental, emotional, and behavioural disorders using a wide range of treatment modalities, including diagnostic tests, prescribing medications, psychotherapy. During the programme, students gain fundamental knowledge on neurobiology, biopsychology, prescription of psychiatric drugs and diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders.
The programme is career orienting in nature that allows students to have simplified and constructive knowledge regarding the field of Psychiatry and its other branch domains. It trains students to treat patients through counselling, psychotherapy, and if required, electric convulsive therapy (ECT) and the administration of drugs. The curriculum also includes training on desensitising patients, mainly through hypnosis, for treatment of mental problems, such as depression and schizophrenia. The curriculum involves study on subjects like Psychology, anatomy, physiology, Biochemistry of the brain, Neurology and neurosurgery, Child Psychiatry, Community Psychiatry, Social Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Preventive Psychiatry.
