A systematic review is a highly rigorous review of existing literature that address a clearly formulated questions. The review systematically searches identify, selects, appraises and synthesizes research evidence relevant to the question using methodology that is explicit, reproducible and leads to minimum bias. Systematic reviews are absolutely crucial in the field of evidence based medicine, but are also highly valued in other fields. Meta analysis is a quantitative, formal, epidemiological study design used to systematically assess previous research studies to derive conclusions about that body of research. Outcome from a metaanalysis may include a more precise estimate of the effect of treatment or risk factor for disease or other outcomes than any individual study contributing to the pooled analysis. Nursing has matured as a science.

Nurse researchers, clinicians and administrators are seeking objectives synthesis of research findings to advance theory, determine effectiveness of interventions, guide patient care and develop public policy. The traditional basis of nursing practice has been changed by the use of randomized, blinded, multicenter clinical trials and meta-analysis leading to "evidence based practice". This can be accomplished through meta-analysis a rigorous statistical procedure that synthesizes results from multiple primary research studies on a common clinical problem or issue.
