In 1989 “Mahabharta” was a revolutionary success. The following year Doordarshan telecasted the mega serial directed by Shyam Benegal: Bharat Ek Khoj. Continuing the trend television broadcasted program that explored various hues of Indian cultural and architectural heritage in “Surabhi”. These were growing years for many of us, and an exposure towards Indian rich heritage and culture has influenced the mindset of the then growing teenagers. It left the impact on the psychology of the impressionable students.
India has a rich repository of classical music and dance which is psychologically distant from the populace. The common cultural space is occupied by Bollywood and its allies. Quality music not only enthralls but touches the very soul of an individual.
SPIC MACAY society has been formed for promotion of Indian cultural music and culture amongst youth, and makes students aware of art and culture beyond the confines of popular culture. It has different chapters across multiple universities in the world.
It was started by Kiran Seth in The year 1977, an innovative idea which has gained traction since, because of the involvement of the biggest names of classical music and dance with the organization.
The idea is simple that famous music players like Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Shiv Sharma, Birju Mahraj would perform in front of college students, free of cost. They would not only entertain but also explain the nuances of classical music to the ignorant minds. At Sharda University you have an opportunity to enjoy this rich cultural movement on March 14, 2014, when one of the foremost proponents of music would come and interact with students.
We hope that this interaction would improve the understanding of classical music and also encourage students to learn it on a regular basis, thus becoming carriers of this rich and unique tradition. It would also make them better human beings and more sensitive souls.
Where ever they go they will carry the pride of Indian culture and indigenous arts. They will believe in deep rooted values, grace, beauty and wisdom of our heritage.
